Jason Kelce has been the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles since 2011 and over that span he has established himself as one of the best and most consistent players at his position in the NFL. Despite being undersized for an offensive lineman at just 6’3″ and 295 pounds, Kelce has used technique, intelligence, and toughness to dominate for over a decade in the league. In that time, he has been named to an incredible 12 Pro Bowls and been a first or second team All-Pro selection 11 times. Kelce has also been a key part of two Eagles Super Bowl championship teams. His career exemplifies what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and relentless improvement each season.
Early Career Success (2011-2015)
Kelce was drafted by the Eagles in the 6th round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of the University of Cincinnati. As a rookie, he quickly won the starting center job and helped anchor an Eagles offensive line that allowed the 5th fewest sacks in the NFL that year. Kelce’s impressive debut season earned him second team All-Pro honors.
Kelce continued building on his success in 2012 by taking his game to an even higher level. He was dominant in both run and pass blocking that year, earning first team All-Pro recognition for the first time. The Eagles offensive line surrendered the fewest sacks in the league with Kelce at the helm. He was also selected to his first Pro Bowl, marking the beginning of an incredible streak of 12 consecutive Pro Bowl appearances.
From 2013-2015, Kelce remained one of the NFL’s premier centers. He was named first team All-Pro each season while continuing to excel as both a run and pass blocker. The Eagles offensive lines during this span consistently ranked among the best in football thanks in large part to Kelce’s leadership and play in the middle. He was a rock in the trenches that opponents struggled to move or get past. Kelce’s combination of technique, strength, and football IQ made him nearly impossible to beat one-on-one.
Super Bowl Champion (2017-2018)
After several solid but ultimately disappointing seasons, the Eagles broke through to reach Super Bowl LII during the 2017 season behind stellar play from Kelce and company up front. Kelce was once again recognized as the best center in football with another first team All-Pro nod. In the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots, Kelce and the Eagles offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage on their way to a 41-33 victory. It was the first Super Bowl championship in franchise history with Kelce playing a major role.
Kelce continued his elite play the following season in 2018. He earned his 8th consecutive first team All-Pro selection while paving the way for running back Jay Ajayi and quarterback Nick Foles during the Eagles’ playoff run. Kelce was a key part of another championship team as Philadelphia defeated the Patriots in a rematch to win Super Bowl LII. At the time, Kelce had established himself as not only the best center in football but also one of the greatest to ever play the position.
Late Career Dominance (2019-2022)
Entering his 30s, many wondered if Kelce could continue performing at such a high level later in his career. But if anything, he seemed to get even better. From 2019-2022, Kelce was named first team All-Pro each season while maintaining his streak of consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. He remained one of the most technically sound and physically dominant blockers in the league despite being on the older side for an NFL offensive lineman.
During the 2019 and 2020 seasons, Kelce was the clear leader of an Eagles offensive line that helped power playoff runs. He controlled the line of scrimmage as a road grader in the run game and a brick wall in pass protection. Opposing defensive linemen simply could not get the best of Kelce regardless of their size, strength, or technique.
In 2021 at age 34, Kelce showed no signs of slowing down. He was recognized as the top center in football yet again with a 10th first team All-Pro nod. Kelce also earned Super Bowl LVI as the Eagles defeated the Patriots in another classic championship matchup. It was a testament to his longevity and ability to perform at an elite level deep into his 30s.
Kelce’s remarkable consistency was on display one final time in 2022. At 35 years old, he started all 17 games for Philadelphia and was named a Pro Bowler for the 12th consecutive year. Kelce’s play dipped only slightly from previous seasons, earning him second team All-Pro honors. It was an incredible final year for one of the greatest centers in NFL history.
