Saquon Barkley is trying to convince Jason Kelce to come out of retirement and return to the NFL now that he’s part of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Running back Barkley was announced as the next guest on the ‘New Heights; podcast, hosted by NFL brothers Travis and Jason Kelce. The brothers shared their excitement for the upcoming Eagles season on social media, but while Jason was looking forward to watching from the sidelines, Barkley had a different idea.

“I’m like a kid in a candy store. I’m happy. I got a fresh start. I can’t wait to meet everybody and just go out there and play ball,” said Barkley in the clip. When Jason mentioned how fun the season would be to watch, Saquon responded, “You don’t gotta watch it, you know,” hinting at a comeback for Kelce after his retirement this offseason.

The older Kelce brother announced his retirement earlier this month in an emotional speech that brought tears to his brother and mother, Donna Kelce. While his wife heard the monologue several times over, the lengthy speech was partially dedicated exclusively to the city of Philadelphia, where he spent his entire 13-year career.

“I am very proud knowing where I was once was and the legacy I have left behind,” Kelce said. “Some people struggle to play in this city – I considered it a blessing to play in the most passionate sports town in America. Thank you Philadelphia, for letting me represent this city.”

Kelce spent his entire career with the Eagles, helping the NFC East franchise win their first and only Super Bowl title after the 2017 NFL season. He was selected to seven Pro Bowls in 13 seasons and was named first-team All-Pro for the sixth time in 2023, proving that he maintained an elite level of play until his retirement.

Barkley signed a lucrative deal with Philadelphia, where he will play for the next three years and earn $37million (£29.3m). Previously, he spent all six years of his football career with the New York Giants. Kelce talked about how cool it is that Barkley is joining his old team in Philadelphia. He made a joke about wishing Barkley had joined the team before he decided to retire.

“So you know Saquon is entering a good situation in Philadelphia,” said Jason. “Social media has been non-stop saying, ‘Jason you sure you want to retire?’ And I’m like yeah I’m pretty positive even though you know I’m a little bit upset how we waited till I retired to make a move like this but you know it’s fine it’ll work out great.”

While playing for the Giants, Barkley rushed for 5,211 yards on 1,201 carries and scored 47 touchdowns in 74 games. NFL analysts are predicting a great upcoming season for Barkley, suggesting that the offensive line he will be running behind is the best of his career.
