Jason Kelce continues to feel the love in the weeks following his emotional retirement announcement.
The former Philadelphia Eagles center was touched to learn of a new scholarship being funded in his honor by another NFL legend, Drew Brees.
Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux, a chain of sports bars, and Brees, a co-owner of the company, recently announced that they were going to be granting 13 scholarships, in honor of Kelce’s “incredible 13-year NFL career,” to collegiate walk-on athletes nationwide.
“Here’s to the spirit of the walk-on,” the restaurant added in a tweet announcing the honor.
“Cheers, baby,” Travis Kelce said after reading off the announcement on the latest episode of New Heights. “This is so…dope.”
“It is awesome,” Jason agreed. “I’m ecstatic about it.”
The beloved NFL star added that he’s “incredibly honored that Drew’s” going to be giving “some more walk-ons an opportunity to realize their dreams…in honor of my walk-on career. He’s the man.”
Kelce was a walk-on during his first season playing football at the University of Cincinnati, meaning that he tried out for the team without having been previously recruited or offered an athletic scholarship to play for the school, so the scholarships granted by Brees will offer other college athletes a breath of financial relief.
Jason also shared that he was able to meet up with Brees for the first time since the former quarterback’s retirement in 2021 during Super Bowl weekend, where they hung out at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Brees was more than happy to offer the soon-to-be retiree advice about what comes after the game, and was one of many people to reach out once the news was officially announced.
Jason shared that he’s particularly enthused by how Brees continues to impact football even after calling it quits, and we can’t wait to see how he does the same.
