Losing your car keys or office ID badge is one thing. Jason Kelce took it several steps further by losing his Super Bowl ring.
The Shaker Heights native and University of Cincinnati graduate revealed on the April 17 edition of his “New Heights” podcast that he lost his the Super Bowl ring he earned when the Philadelphia Eagles won the NFL title in 2018.
What happened to Jason Kelce’s Super Bowl ring?
Kelce said he misplaced his ring in a pool of Cincinnati’s famous Skyline Chili when he was in the Queen City taping a “New Heights” episode at UC.
And it might be gone forever.
Kelce filed a report with the University of Cincinnati police. It described the ring as lost property rather than stolen. Kelce’s ring was estimated to be worth $100,000, according to Cincinnati Enquirer reporting.
Molly Yeager, corporate communications manager at Rumpke Waste & Recycling, which services the UC campus, told the Enquirer that finding such a small item at its Colerain Township landfill would be “very unlikely.”
Believe it or not, Kelce isn’t the first athlete to misplace (ahem, lose) a championship ring.
Robert Horry lost all 7 of his NBA championship rings
Kelce losing his one and only championship ring is bad, but it’s not Robert Horry bad.
The seven-time NBA champion, who won titles playing for the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, misplaced all of his bling during a move, according to reporting by ESPN.
Super Bowl I ring goes missing for more than 20 years
Jerry Kramer won NFL titles as a member of the Green Bay Packers in 1961, 1962 and 1965. The offensive lineman was a starter for Packers teams that won the first two Super Bowls for the 1966 and 1967 seasons.
That first Super Bowl ring, a rare piece of history considering it was awarded to a select few for winning what eventually became one of the world’s marquee sporting events, went missing for years when Kramer lost it in an airplane bathroom.
But Kramer’s story has a happy ending. He recovered the ring just before it was to be sold at an auction, ESPN reports.
The Fridge reclaims Super Bowl ring with a little help
William “The Refrigerator” Perry was a larger-than-life figure during the Chicago Bears’ run to a Super Bowl 20 win. Getting back his ring took a little help – literally.
Ten-year-old Cliff Forrest dipped into his college fund to purchase Perry’s ring before giving it back to the former defensive lineman, who had fallen on hard times, according to ESPN.
Another 21st century ring went missing before Kelce lost his Super Bowl bling
Derrick Coleman won a title as a Seattle Seahawks rookie in 2013. He then lost the ring, but it came back to him through an almost unbelievable series of events.
According to an ESPN history of Super Bowl rings, Coleman left his ring in a rental car in LA. David Mulugheta, the agent for Coleman’s teammate Earl Thomas, found the Tiffany and Co. box that housed the ring in the exact same car. Mulugheta’s wife thought she had a special gift from her husband until she opened the box and saw a Super Bowl ring inside.
From there, Mulugheta passed the ring to Thomas, who then returned it to Coleman.
New York Jets player reunited with Super Bowl ring decades after win
John Shmitt’s diamond-laden gold ring for winning Super Bowl three as a member of the Jets disappeared during a surfing trip in Hawaii.
A lifeguard recovered it while snorkeling and hid it away in his closet, according to ESPN’s history of Super Bowl rings.
This ring was meant to be with Schmitt, though.
When the lifeguard died, his great-niece found the ring stashed away among his belongings. She realized it was a Super Bowl ring, contacted the NFL, reached out to the Jets at the league’s suggestion and delivered the ring back to Schmitt four decades later.
