After it was reported that Jason Kelce would be retiring from football, a sweet moment between him and his mom, Donna Kelce, has gone viral.
The elder brother of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Jason Kelce has won one Super Bowl and is a seven-time Pro Bowler in addition to being a six-time All-Pro.
After the Philadelphia Eagles’ season-ending playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, the 36-year-old center for the Eagles told teammates he was retiring after his 13th season, per NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo. While Jason Kelce is yet to confirm his reported retirement, his actions at the end of the game hinted this was the case.
Jason Kelce was seen in tears during the defeat and declined to speak to reporters when the match ended. The 13-year-pro shared an emotional embrace with his longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland before making his way off the field. Jason Kelce also took a moment to greet family members in the stands before finishing his walk to the locker room.
Newsweek emailed Jason Kelce through a Philadelphia Eagles spokesperson for comment Wednesday.
“This moment with @JasonKelce and Donna after Super Bowl LVII will always be special,” the caption read. At the time of writing, it has been viewed 1.6 million times.
Donna Kelce found herself in the unprecedented position of watching her sons battle it out at the Superbowl in 2023 when the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs went head-to-head.
Jason Kelce was on the losing end of a heartbreaker against his younger brother but thankfully his mom was there to comfort him. The pair embraced each other in an emotional hug as Donna Kelce could be heard saying “I love you. Good job. It was so fun watching you all week. I love you,” before Jason Kelce told her to go celebrate with his brother.
X users are loving the video but many are saying they wished Jason Kelce was able to end his career on a high.
“Congratulations to @JasonKelce on a Hall of Fame career for the @Eagles. You kept this team afloat for many seasons and serve as a model for what NFL players should strive to be. Enjoy your beautiful family and what life has in store for you. Rest well, 62. It’s earned,” one person wrote when they reshared the video.
“I really wanted to see him win one more,” said another, referring to the Superbowl.
“Best thing you’ll see today. Truly great player leaving the game but remembering where it’s really at,” a third person wrote.
A fourth added: “I wish this is how he had retired, because he deserved to go out on top.”
After playing college football for the Cincinnati Bearcats, Jason Kelce was selected by the Eagles in the 2011 NFL draft and has spent his entire career in Philadelphia.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni didn’t hold back when he was questioned about the possibility of losing his center.”He’s special, and I love him,” Sirianni said Monday night. “He’s one of the most special guys I’ve been around.”
Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson said: “I love him. He’s one of the best to ever play the game. The things he can do on the football field athletically—I don’t think we’ll see another one like him for a long time.”
In an episode of New Heights released Wednesday, Jason Kelce commented on the retirement rumors, saying when the time is right, the public will hear from the man himself. He explained that after the game he didn’t announce what he was doing on purpose, despite “what’s been leaked to the media.”
“I just don’t think you’re in the position after a game like that to really make that decision, I just don’t. There’s too much emotion in the moment to fully really grasp that decision,” he said.
In a previous episode of the podcast, Travis Kelce revealed he got emotional when the Eagles made a case for Jason Kelce to be added to the NFL Hall of Fame. The brothers spoke about the Eagles’ 27-minute-long video regarding Jason Kelce being inducted into Canton.
“There’s nothing better than what the Eagles posted about you,” he said. “The 30-minute highlight video of why Jason Kelce transcended the game of football and why you should undoubtedly be in the Hall of Fame? Dude, it was f****** unbelievable. I cried. And there isn’t even a moment when you should be crying. It was great, man.”
Update 01/17/24, 11:30 a.m. ET: This article was updated to include Kelce’s comment on the latest New Heights episode.
