Recently, LeBron James unveiled the latest hue of his upcoming Nike LeBron 21 shoe. The colorway honors the late great Prince, one of his favorite musicians. James posted a picture of the shoe on Instagram and captioned it with lyrics from “Purple Rain,” one of Prince’s most well-known songs. The sneaker has a purple coating that resembles Prince’s wardrobe. The piece’s other embellishments, including the Nike swoosh, are all highlighted in gold. This colorway is notable because it is a powerful depiction of the Lakers’ colors. Furthermore, James finds great meaning in this release.

On April 21, 2016, Prince overdosed on fentanyl accidentally and passed away. James once said, “I just think we’re losing a lot of our heroes a lot sooner than expected,” in homage to the legacy. He was exceptional as a musician and for the impact he had on music and the lives of others, including my mother and those who grew up in that era. I’m sorry for his whole family; it’s terrible that someone with his kind of talent would depart so quickly.

LeBron James played Purple Rain while costumed as Prince at a Cleveland Cavaliers Halloween celebration. Taking the stage with an electric guitar in hand, he was dressed in the signature style of Prince. One of the biggest releases from Nike to date has had to be this one. James made fun of his Nike LeBron 21s last week while working out with his youngest kid, Bryce Maximus. Later this year, the shoe is expected to be introduced.
