After a tough loss to the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Lakers played the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.
In order to get back to.500 for the season, the Lakers needed to defeat a lesser club, and they did just that at Crypto.com Arena, winning 134-110.
Taurean Prince was sidelined due to a knee injury, so Rui Hachimura opened the scoring with an incredible corner 3-pointer. The Lakers took an early lead thanks to three baskets from LeBron James. After that, D’Angelo Russell and James each scored two baskets to make the score 17-6.
However, two Trail Blazers veterans, Malcolm Brogdon and Jerami Grant, instantly assisted their team in getting back into the game, tying it at 24. But the Lakers’ second unit performed admirably to close out the first quarter and took a 36–31 lead into the second.
Russell scored five baskets in the first five minutes of the second quarter to keep the Lakers ahead, and Jarred Vanderbilt’s steal and dunk put the margin up to eleven points.
After missing the previous three games due to a knee injury, Cam Reddish also looked good early on against his former team, scoring six points in the first quarter of the second quarter.
James then extended the lead to 67-54 at the half, thrilling the crowd with a steal and a massive dunk that came after Russell’s bounce pass alley-oop.
Austin Reaves warmed up with two layups and a three-pointer in the third quarter after the Lakers had been chilly earlier in the game.
The Lakers then maintained their pressure, as James converted a three-point play to increase the lead to 20 points and Russell added another three-pointer.
Russell had a night where he just could not miss, and the Lakers were up 103-87 at the end of the third quarter courtesy to a three-point shot by Brogdon that beat the buzzer. He had 26 points at the end of the quarter.
James sparked the crowd again at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a massive slam and a three-pointer. Russell’s 34 points in all were the cherry on top of an incredible effort. Subsequently, he sealed the victory with consecutive triples.
Because of their twenty-point advantage, the Lakers were able to win easily even though they rested key players in the final minutes.
