Former NBA Star Gets Honest About Playing Against LeBron James

Gilbert Arenas revealed how LeBron James’ game has evolved.

Very few players in NBA history have evolved the way LeBron James has. With a career that spans from 2003-2024, LeBron has had to adapt firsthand to the new rules and play styles of the NBA.

Former Grizzlies guard Gilbert Arenas spoke about how he’s seen James’ game evolve from when they played against each other, to now. Arenas spoke about the evolution while on the newest episode of Podcast P with Paul George.

“He was one of those players,” Arenas said. “So smart that he plays to his strengths, never his weaknesses. So when you’re trying to say he’s not a one on one guy,…he’s not going to try to do it right. He’s going to play to his perfection. And that’s hard to do, you have to consciously be thinking about like Ben Simmons, ‘I’m not going to be suckered in to just shoot jump shots just to prove a point. That’s what LeBron mastered, I’m just going to stick with what I’m great at and I’m going to perfect it. And if y’all think he’s fast now, what you think was coming down the lane then?”

If there’s one thing LeBron James does particularly well, it’s playing to his strengths. In last night’s win against the Golden State Warriors, he drove to the rim for a specific reason during the final play, and it resulted in a win for the Lakers. While he’s adapted to shooting long threes to match today’s game, he still plays at a highly efficient rate. That’s what gave the Memphis Grizzlies so much trouble during the NBA Playoffs last season.
