Celtics Thrive with Inside Game, Defense in Win Against 76ers

In a departure from their usual reliance on the three-point shot, the Boston Celtics showcased their versatility in a commanding 117-99 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Led by a dominant performance inside the paint and suffocating defense, the Celtics secured their ninth consecutive win with a well-rounded display.

Recognizing the need to diversify their offensive approach, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla made strategic additions to the roster, including the acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis. While the team still leads the league in three-point attempts, Tuesday night’s game highlighted their ability to win through alternative means.

Jaylen Brown spearheaded the Celtics’ offensive onslaught with 31 points, complemented by a near triple-double from Jayson Tatum, who contributed 29 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Despite a standout performance from the 76ers’ Tyrese Maxey, who tallied 32 points, the absence of reigning MVP Joel Embiid left a noticeable void in Philadelphia’s lineup.

The Celtics seized control of the game with a decisive 10-0 run out of halftime, extending their lead to as much as 14 points in the third quarter. Although the 76ers mounted a comeback early in the fourth, spurred by Maxey’s heroics, the Celtics responded emphatically, embarking on a game-changing 17-0 run ignited by their stifling defense.

Coach Mazzulla showcased his willingness to experiment with lineup rotations, notably swapping Tatum and Brown’s playing time in the first quarter. While the adjustment yielded mixed results for Brown, Tatum thrived with the change, demonstrating his versatility and impact on both ends of the floor.

In a deviation from their typical three-point-heavy approach, the Celtics exhibited a different shot profile in the first half, emphasizing efficiency inside the paint. Despite being outshot by the 76ers, the Celtics capitalized on defensive stops and turnovers to maintain a narrow lead at halftime.

Derrick White emerged as a defensive stalwart for the Celtics, recording three blocks early in the game and contributing to the team’s collective effort in protecting the rim.
