Former Boston Celtics star Tony Allen has described guarding Lakers legend Kobe Bryant as a nightmare. Allen fouled out of a game against Bryant in just eight minutes, prompting him to ask for a detailed video of every move the Lakers superstar made. He studied the tape religiously and noticed similarities between Bryant and Michael Jordan.

Allen considered Bryant his toughest defensive assignment and would check the scoreboard in the second half to determine how many points Bryant had. Bryant acknowledged Allen’s effort and called him one of the best defenders to guard him. Allen’s hard work earned him six All-Defense team selections and a 2008 NBA title with the Celtics.

Bryant, in turn, credited Allen as the best defender he ever faced, and gifted him a pair of game-worn shoes with a heartfelt message.
