Marcus Smart’s Absence on the Court, Presence in Memory as Celtics Prepare for Grizzlies Clash
In a twist of fate, Marcus Smart will be absent from the Grizzlies-Celtics game on Sunday, marking his anticipated return to TD Garden since his departure from Boston. Despite Smart’s unavailability due to a right finger injury, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla took a moment to reminisce about the impact the now-Grizzlies guard had on the team and the city.
Mazzulla expressed the sentiment that Smart’s contributions to the organization and the community are indelibly etched into the fabric of Boston. He emphasized that Smart’s influence went beyond the court, highlighting his role in shaping the team’s defensive foundation and his commitment to community service.
“I always said you don’t replace a guy like him, you just find different ways to be able to do it,” the Celtics coach told reporters Saturday. Who he is will always be etched into the City of Boston because of what he’s done in community service and what he’s done here, which is helping represent and give. I think he’s one of the guys that started our defensive foundation before I got here because of his ability to compete at a high level, to defend at a high level and execute different coverages.
Acknowledging the challenge of replacing a player of Smart’s caliber, Mazzulla conveyed that the Celtics are finding different ways to embody the qualities he brought to the team. The coach praised Smart’s defensive prowess, competitive spirit, and execution of various coverages that laid the groundwork for the team’s success.
“You don’t replace him. It just looks different,” Mazzulla said. “[Jayson] Tatum dove on the floor for a loose ball. Derrick [White]’s making winning plays and the back tips in transition. Jrue [Holiday]’s [got] constant intensity and focusing on everyone’s strengths and what they’re able to do. Jaylen’s individual defense, that’s just as tough as what another player does. It just looks different.
Reflecting on Smart’s impact off the court, Mazzulla commended his mindset and defensive intensity, emphasizing that Smart’s contributions went beyond the flashy hustle plays that endeared him to fans. The coach expressed anticipation for Smart’s return to TD Garden, recognizing the significance of seeing the former Celtic in a different uniform.
Smart, drafted by the Celtics in 2014, quickly became a fan favorite in Boston due to his hard-nosed playing style, defensive intensity, and hustle plays. His departure during the offseason raised concerns about the team losing some of its toughness, but Mazzulla dismissed those fears, pointing to the current starters’ contributions that showcase a different yet formidable style of play.
As the Celtics face the Grizzlies without Smart on the court, his legacy and impact continue to resonate within the team and the hearts of Boston fans.
