Former Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo found himself in legal trouble over the weekend, as he was arrested in Indiana on various charges, including possession of a firearm and marijuana.
Rondo, who spent a significant portion of his 16-year NBA career with the Celtics, was apprehended on Sunday afternoon following a traffic stop in Jackson County, Indiana. According to Indiana State Police, the stop occurred on Interstate 65, where officers detected the scent of marijuana emanating from Rondo’s vehicle.
Upon searching the car, law enforcement discovered a firearm, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Rondo’s possession of a firearm was particularly noteworthy as he is prohibited from having one due to an existing protection order against him.
All charges against the 37-year-old are classified as misdemeanors. Following his arrest, Rondo was booked into the Jackson County Jail but was subsequently released after posting bond.
This incident adds to a series of legal troubles Rondo has faced in recent years, including previous encounters involving protection orders. Notably, a Louisville woman had previously sought an emergency protective order against Rondo in 2022, citing threats to her life. However, that order was later dismissed following Rondo’s completion of anger management classes, counseling, and a mental health evaluation.
Furthermore, another protective order was filed against Rondo by the same woman in March of the following year, though the case concluded with an agreed order five months later. Additionally, it is reported that a child who was present in Rondo’s car at the time of his arrest was released into the custody of a family member.
While Rondo is expected to make an appearance in Jackson County Superior Court, a specific date for his court appearance has yet to be determined.
Throughout his NBA career, Rondo has earned two championship rings, one with the Celtics in 2008 and another with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. A four-time NBA All-Star, all during his tenure with Boston, Rondo has also played for several other teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Cleveland Cavaliers. His most recent NBA stint occurred during the 2021-22 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
