D-Lo was a man on a mission on Friday night!
It was a special night for Los Angeles Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell and the team. The Lakers were without their superstar LeBron James due to an ankle injury, and the team needed someone to step up in a big way.
Russell answered the call and then some. He had his best game of the season and added to his Laker legacy in the process. During last night’s win, Russell surpassed three-time Laker champion Rick Fox, moving to ninth all-time in three-pointers made in Laker history.
The 28-year-old tied Fox during the fourth quarter of last night’s game with 480. Russell made two more to lead the Lakers to victory and 482 total three-pointers in the purple and gold.
He’ll now pass Eddie Jones with ten more makes, and Laker champions Kyle Kuzma with 21 more, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope with 43 more.
The evolution of the three-pointer is staggering. Because of this rise in three-point takes and makes, we’re seeing players who haven’t been a Laker for a long time inside the top ten in made threes. Russell passed Fox in less than 266 games played.
The Lakers have 17 more games in the season. With how Russell is shooting the ball, he could surpass KCP before we hit the end of the regular season to move to sixth all-time. It will take some time to move fifth all-time to surpass his former coach and Laker great Byron Scott. Will he be around to do so? We shall see.
In the meantime, Russell has elevated his game, and he’ll need to continue to get LA out of the play-in.
