Celtics Stumble in Star Absence as Lakers Capitalize
In a nationally-televised game, the Boston Celtics faced unexpected challenges as star players Anthony Davis and LeBron James were sidelined with injuries. Despite initial expectations of an easy win in front of their home crowd, the Celtics fell short against the Los Angeles Lakers, losing 114-105.
Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the NBA when key players are absent, Celtics player Kristaps Porzingis highlighted the difficulty of such matchups. He expressed the team’s awareness that these games can be tough and that success is never guaranteed.
The Lakers, without their star duo, showcased the depth of their roster. Austin Reaves, typically a third option, seized the opportunity to shine, scoring 32 points on 10-18 shooting. Jaxson Hayes, previously on the fringe of the rotation, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. D’Angelo Russell, dealing with trade rumors, delivered a well-rounded performance with 16 points, 14 assists, and 8 rebounds.
In contrast, the Celtics struggled with a lackadaisical performance, committing 10 turnovers in the opening period and displaying lapses in defensive assignments and transition defense. The Lakers, known for their three-point struggles, surprised by hitting 19 of 36 attempts. Despite attempts to mount comebacks, the Celtics never managed to take the lead in the second half.
Celtics player Jayson Tatum acknowledged the team’s subpar performance, describing it as a “bad week at work.” Head coach Joe Mazzulla emphasized the need to embrace the struggles, recognizing that stretches of poor basketball are inevitable during the NBA season.
While the loss may be disheartening, the Celtics maintain their position as the best team in the league with a 37-12 record. Mazzulla emphasized accountability and the importance of working through challenging times. Despite recent struggles, the Celtics hold the best home record at 22-3.
Mazzulla dismissed concerns about the team’s recent performance, citing that every contender faces setbacks and bad stretches. He stressed the importance of how the team responds to adversity. Porzingis echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the value of learning from losses and the opportunity for growth.
Looking ahead, Mazzulla focused on upcoming challenges, aiming for a productive practice and preparing for the next game against the Grizzlies. Despite the recent setbacks, the Celtics remain optimistic about their potential for growth and success in the remainder of the season.
