Bronny James will get reps in the G-league according to NBA Insider.
As the son of basketball royalty, Bronny James will have plenty of opportunities to thrive in the NBA. Even so, it might take a while for him to truly develop his game. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Bronny is expected to compete in the G-League for a time, regardless of where he lands in the upcoming draft.
“If he does get picked in the draft, he’d likely spend the season in the G-League,” Woj revealed.
Bronny, who just finished his freshman season at USC, has been one of the biggest stories of the year as fans and experts track his basketball journey. And while Bronny has shown flashes of greatness on the court, his debut college season was far from what most were expecting. In 25 games played, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game on just 36% shooting from the field.
He was often invisible on the court and his impact was described as minimal at best for the Trojans. With such an underwhelming campaign, a growing number of fans believe that Bronny should wait and hold his NBA career so he can further develop his game.
But it seems that no matter where the young King ends up, he’s going to spend some time in the G-League first, which is arguably the best route for his development as a player. In the right environment, with the proper guidance, Bronny could become a high-impact player in the league who sticks around for the long haul.
Even at his best, however, Bronny is just not on the same level as his dad and fans cannot expect him to play a similar type of role for his career. If Bronny can embrace his talents as a two-way shooter and playmaker, it shouldn’t be hard to find his place in the league.
The only question now is if Bronny would rather expand his game with another year of college or through the G-League playing with professional-level players in a pressure-free setting. Only time will tell which way he decides to go but it may just determine the entire trajectory of his career.
Should The Lakers Draft Bronny?
While it’s currently unknown which team will end up with Bronny James, or if he’ll even get picked at all, we know that the Lakers are at least open to the idea if it keeps their superstar happy.
For years now, it’s been said that LeBron’s biggest goal is to join forces with his son and the Lakers might have a chance to make it happen if Bronny is available on their pick this summer. While he’s not yet NBA-ready, the Lakers might still be able to make it worthwhile if they can help develop his game to become a solid playmaking point guard off the bench.
Many critics are actively pushing for the Lakers not to waste their pick on such a risky and unproven prospect, but if he can find a rhythm in the G-League, it may help establish his role and cement his place in their long-term plans. At the very least, the Lakers can at least give it a try and determine for themselves just what Bronny might be capable of at his best.
