KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — The Kansas City Chiefs have their veteran punter Tommy Townsend head to a new team in free agency.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Townsend will be signing with the Houston Texans on a two-year, $6 million contract.
The Chiefs signed former Buffalo Bills punter Matt Araiza in February, signaling that the team would let Townsend’s rookie contract expire heading into the beginning of the 2024 NFL year.
Townsend took over the reins from longtime Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt when he was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020.
The Florida product was an All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and was a key piece of the Chiefs winning back-to-back Super Bowls.
He was also voted by his teammates to be a captain while he was a Chief.
The 27-year-old averaged 47.4 yards per punt, with 40.8% of his punts landing inside the opponent’s 20-yard line during his four years in Kansas City.
