Kelce predicts how Chicago Bears will do with Williams on board

TRAVIS Kelce has hailed No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams as having a “game-changer mentality” and compared him to Patrick Mahomes ahead of the new NFL season.

Kelce has the pleasure of playing alongside Mahomes, possibly the greatest quarterback of them all, at the Kansas City Chiefs.

And when Kelce looks at Williams, who was selected at last month’s NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, he sees similar qualities.

Speaking on his New Heights podcast, Kelce said Mahomes’ college highlights at Texas Tech and Williams’ college highlights at USC have a lot in common.

“It was a lot of feel, a lot of just trust throwing that thing downfield and letting his guys go make plays,” Kelce said.

“He has that game-changer mentality where at any moment he can kill you with his arm, and he can do some things with his legs and run the ball – a lot of QBs can’t, that throw it that well.”

The Bears had a disappointing campaign in 2023, finishing 7-10 and missing out on the playoffs.

Kelce is in no doubt that Williams will help them to fare better when the 2024 season kicks off in September.

“I thought he was an absolute stud,” Kelce said.

“I think Caleb goes in there and makes them a better football team, I really do.”

There’s no doubt that big things are expected of Williams in Chicago.

The 22-year-old played for Oklahoma and USC in his college football years, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2022.

It had already been widely reported that Williams would be the first player picked at the Draft.

And he certainly showed that he wasn’t wanting for ambition when he spoke in Detroit.

“My goal is to get into as far as February as I can,” Williams said.

“It’s an honour and a privilege. I care about the fans, the community, the players and the coaches and I care about the Chicago Bears.”

Kelce is part of a Chiefs team that has is widely seen as the NFL’s newest dynasty.

Inspired by the iconic Mahomes, the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers to win the 2020 Super Bowl.

They then picked up another Vince Lombardi Trophy by seeing off the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023.

And in February, the Chiefs made it three Super Bowl triumphs in five season.

They were losing at halftime to the 49ers in Las Vegas, but came back for a 25-22 victory in overtime.

The winning touchdown, scored by Mecole Hardman, was inevitably set up by Mahomes.
