The GOAT might have retired, but his legacy lives on. In recent times, however, the induction of yet another legendary quarterback has left the NFL world divided in opinions. While many have maintained their stance, others have sided with the Kansas City star, Patrick Mahomes.
In a recent episode of Club Shay Shay, former NFL player Cam Newton was faced with a hypothetical scenario: in the last drive of the game, with two minutes left on the clock and needing to go 80 yards for a game-winning touchdown, who would he choose between Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, both in their prime? Cam’s answer was unequivocal.
Cam Newton takes a pick between Brady and Mahomes
Cam Newton chooses Tom Brady! He explained that while Mahomes has had a significant impact on the game; it does not compare to the GOAT. Brady’s influence was different. When playing against Brady, Newton reflected, “It was like the game is never over.” As a quarterback, Newton opined that one never wanted to get distracted by the opposing offense because with Brady, there always seemed to be too much time left. Cam emphasized Brady’s consistent ability to get the job done, irrespective of the fact of whether he had elite support or not. He further recalls how the audience would interact with Brady, chanting his name as he took the field, “that type of impact I don’t think the game will ever see.”
He also credited the entire Patriots organization, not just Brady, for their undisputed success. Despite Mahomes’ impressive performance and three Super Bowl wins at just 28 years old, the consensus remains that Tom Brady holds the title of the greatest quarterback ever. Brady’s longevity and exceptional skill have left an indelible mark on the NFL, spanning 23 seasons compared to Mahomes’ seven. Yet there is a catch, with Brady announcing his retirement, and Mahomes having a lot more years to accumulate further accolades and improve his performance- the ultimate verdict based on career stats might alter.
Tom Brady vs Patrick Mahomes: Career stats and performance
Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes represent two eras of NFL excellence, each with their impressive statistics. Brady, with a career spanning over two decades, boasts 248 wins and a win rate of 0.756, alongside his unmatched record of seven Super Bowl titles. His playoff excellence is further highlighted by a balanced head-to-head record against Mahomes, splitting six regular-season games and winning both playoff encounters, including a significant AFC Championship game in 2019 and the Super Bowl in 2021.
On the other hand, Mahomes, though earlier in his career, has already achieved 57 wins, with a slightly superior win rate of 0.792. Despite being 0-2 against Brady in playoff matchups, his regular-season record shows resilience and skill, especially in their later meetings. This juxtaposition of Brady’s enduring dominance and Mahomes’ rapid rise paints a picture of two quarterbacks whose paths to success, while different, are equally remarkable
