Entering the early days of their 2024 championship defense, the Kansas City Chiefs are working to sharpen one portion of their already potent offense.

“I think y’all saw today, we tried to throw a few more deep passes,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday as the team continued Phase 3 of its offseason workouts at the team facility in Kansas City.

“Get back to the deep game,” Mahomes said.

“I think we’ve done a great job of mastering the intermediate and short stuff, but we want to get back to having that part of the offense as well… Coach [Andy Reid] is really pushing us to push it down the field. It’s hard to do against our defense but we’re trying to make it happen.”

Even though the Chiefs collected a second consecutive Lombardi Trophy in 2023, Kansas City’s typically high-flying offense was forced to re-invent itself, swapping quick-strike scores for long, methodical drives.

According to Pro Football Focus, Mahomes finished the year with just 8.9% of his passes going deep — the second-lowest rate of his career. But the addition of speedy wideout Hollywood Brown could bring a change.

“Hollywood does a nice job out there as a receiver,” said head coach Andy Reid on Wednesday. “Looks like he and Pat are developing a chemistry out there. We’ll just take it step-by-step as we go.”

Brown raised eyebrows during Wednesday’s practice with a one-handed grab during the 11-on-11 team period, impressing teammates on both sides of the ball.

“You gotta just shake his hand on those,” said linebacker Nick Bolton.

“Boy, we are rolling,” said cornerback Trent McDuffie said with a smile. “Pat definitely has some weapons.”
